At Home Hair Highlighting...

A couple weeks ago, I came across this super skanktacular picture of my hair at its dark rooted best. I am one who will put off a fresh highlight for months because I can't find a spare 3 hours in my schedule or 120 bucks laying around for the splurge. Thus, the last time I had my hair done was the end of May. Not good.
Things are tighter than tight around here, and the only option that kept coming to mind was a thrifty DIY project. But, the last time I tried to color my own hair, I wound up a lovely shade of blonde, also known as brassy orange. Super sexy.
Still, desperate times call for desperate measures. Since I have two upcoming weddings in the next month, I knew that I couldn't just tell the brides-to-be to just let me wear a hat or something to cover up my skankitude. So, I recruited my new found hairdressers (hi, mom! hi, yelly!) to don some plastic gloves, cut up some squares of Reynolds tin foil, and get to work. Yup, real, live tin foil from a roll. Because I'm sure that's what they use at the salon.
The main problem came to selecting the right box of color. So, mom and I scoured the aisles at Walmart and found what I hoped would be my new box of cheap hair love.
Insert Revlon Frost and Glow. I know frost, right?!

I actually highlighted in stages and the first one occurred at the Lakehouse. I failed to document it because my camera ran out of battery. But, you know I was wanting to photograph it for blog's sake because I totally was.

Since blondes are never as blonde as we think we are (right, blonde girls?!), I had to lighten more and peformed stage 2 with my mom last week at her house. I have to tell you, as I leaned over the kitchen sink scrubbing out color, I really missed the relaxing scalp massage that my stylist usually does while she shampoos my hair {by far my favorite part of getting my hair done}. But for a whopping $14, I'll forgo the massage...

The end product was pretty darn blonde. And my part was able to cover up a couple of too-blonde mistakes, so it will have to do. Hopefully until I get some Christmas cash :)

Do I have in at-home-hair-highlighters in my midst? If you're a blondie, I'd love to know what you use or if you're classy and use tin foil like me!

{PS. A couple of you recently asked how I add text to my photos - I use Picasa (by google) and simple use the add text feature when I edit my photos! It's a free download and my fonts are free from various online sources!}

N-O-L-A Girls, We're Irresistable!

On Friday afternoon, I boarded a plane with these lovely ladies for New Orleans, LA - which you all - no problem - identified as my weekend destination. And, yes, the beignets were absolutely devine, though I could have done without the the hot and humid weather and the unavoidable stench of the city that we couldn't seem to escape.
Omiword, I am a GIANT!

We were celebrating the singledom of my best friend, Allison, who will marry in less than a month. Having studied architecture for six months in NOLA in 2006, she thought it only appropriate to have her last hurrah in one of her favorite cities. Admittedly, I had a very hard time leaving my boys, and lost it in the terminal when my mom told me that Becks cried for 15 minutes after dropping me at the airport. To drive the dagger in further, B said that on Saturday he just burst into tears and said, I miss mommy! I died. I haven't flown or been more than 2 hours away from Becks since he was born, and I made sure everyone important knew my wishes for him should I not make it back from this trip. Yes, I am that kind of crazy.

But despite my the unfortunate demise of my freshly polished toes {no, really, I'm probably going to lose nails from walking Bourbon Street in heels the first night we were there}, I made it out relatively unscathed. Was I exhausted at school this morning, landing less than 12 hours before? Oh yes. Did I feel awful getting to see my boy for only 45 minutes before bedtime on Sunday night? Definitely. But, did I make some memories with some great friends and a beautiful bachelorette? Absolutely.

For those of you familiar with NOLA, we not only visited Cafe du Monde, but also had dinner at The Court of Two Sisters, had brunch at Stanley's, hurricanes at Pat O'Brien's and lunch at Cafe Fleur de Lys.

And, because no trip is complete without a little medical drama, Allison stepped on broken glass as we were headed home for the evening, and apparently every doctor on Bourbon Street wanted to come to her rescue, plus a male nurse {or so he said}. From the looks of it, we were headed to the ER in New Orleans. But, Katie settled us all down, and put the doctor part of her DMD to good use and fix up our girl in the shower stall back at the hotel. {Sister, I hope you got that tetanus shot...}

And, because he's always on my mind - how funny was it that I should come across a little piece of home hundreds of miles away?

Have a great Monday, yall!

Where in the world was Babbling Abby?

Being the jetsetter {that I am so not}, I spent the weekend in someplace that everyone should visit at least once. Can you guess?

Your First Day of Preschool: A Picture Documentary

Today's post will be another addition to Beck's glorified babybook, so bear with the picture overload....

It was so nice to wake up at 7am this morning, and have an entire hour to prepare myself for the morning. I'd already forgotten how much I miss my summer schedule. Once I was a cup of caffeine deep, B woke up and it wasn't long before Becks was up too. B and I went upstairs together, me with camera in hand (of course) and I snapped this picture the moment I opened the door. I don't know if he was excited to see us or excited about school or what, but this was the expression we were greeted with when the door opened...
He requested oatmeal for breakfast, but kept a stoic expression through his morning nosh.
Then, by the time we were ready to leave, it was meltdown mode. And his new shoes were still a smidge big, so we went back to the oldies but goodies for the day. I don't wanna go to schoooool! he wailed while I tried to get him to pose for picture. But, we made it there in one piece and the stoic expression returned as he tried to figure out what was going on.
And a nice passer-by offered to snap a family picture. So, of course, I obliged.
Then, Becks tried to escape to the playground. And that little stink actually opened that gate.
Upon entering the building, we located this his name on a bulletin board...
Found the gym...
And finally made it to his room, where playdoh and toys awaited...
He wore a froggy nametag around his neck...
And when it was time for us parents to leave, I stole one last glance in the door to find this...
...my boy wearing a ladybug hat. Backwards. Just like always :)

B and I went to parent orientation and when we returned an hour later, he was sitting at a table eating animal crackers with his new friends. Come in here, mommy! he said when he saw us standing at the door.

We finally made our way out, and he looked every bit the big boy that I try to deny. Every bit of his babyness is falling by the wayside...

Before we left, he played on the playground...
And then we convinced him that First Watch would be a much better place for lunch than McDonalds. {At least for me and B!}

He, of course, had bacon. And was happy as a clam
Happy First First Day of School, Beckham!

Another milestone on the horizon...

He went to bed a toddler tonight...
...and, tomorrow, he will wake up a preschooler.
Thursday morning will be the first first day of school that Beckham will ever have.
Already having a personal day booked for Friday, I just couldn't possibly take another day off to take him. I mean, it's been a short week anyway due to Labor Day. Two days worth of sub plans? Ick. Getting my first graders out of routine for TWO DAYS STRAIGHT? Double ick.
But I agonized over not being able to go. I cried tears over not being able to go. I was sick to my stomach over not being able to go. I was cursing the whole working-mother bit over not being able to go. But, alas, I resigned to my school responsibilities and prepared B to take him solo. I recruited my mother-in-law to accompany him - so she could remember to tell me everything that B would inevitably forget. What are his teachers like? Did he play? Did he make friends? Where does he hang his backpack? Did he miss me?

Then I did some thinking... Someday, would I regret taking two days off in a row? Or would I regret not being there to hold my son's hand as he entered his classroom for the first time or give my him a big hug when I picked him up? Yup, I would most definitely regret that. A lot.
So I signed up for a sub for two straight days, and spent planning time and after school hours making detailed sub plans. For, tomorrow, I will walk my boy into his classroom, meet his teachers, and check out his potential playmates. I will, personally, give him the biggest hug when the day is over. And then, B and I will take him out to lunch.

Because, well, you only get one first first day.

What I Wore Wednesday

For goodness sake, is it really Wednesday again?! The time is escaping me! I've really come to enjoy the WIWW posts, and it {honestly} has inspired me to think about what's in my closet and how I can come up with new and interesting combinations. If you don't play along, I'm sure Lindsey would love for you to! Check her out at The Pleated Poppy :)

Here we go. Out of order as usual.

The Doesn't Look as Good in Pictures Outift
I was trying to wear my white summer flops one last time before Labor Day!
dress - gap outlet
sweater - goodwill
flops - NY&Co. (OLD!)

The Crazy-Eye Picture
Shot in the mirror at The Lakehouse. Best pic I could get of myself since I didn't want to harrass my family to take pictures of me for my goofy posts! {Okay...maybe B did take a pic of me and it looked awful}
dress - gap outlet (same style as one above)
hoodie - goodwill

The It's-Jean-Friday Character Tee Outfit
The Very Hungry Caterpillar tee - walmart
jeans - banana republic outlet

The Needs-to-be-Taken-In Outfit

I LOOOOOVE THIS DRESS!!!! Wearing it with a belt and cinching it in the back for photo. Just wore it baggy with the belt, though :) Loved it too much to wait to get it taken in!

The Si Senorita Outfit
The dress is very flowy and patterned and I feel like I should be eating queso while wearing it.
dress - goodwill
sweater - goodwill
belt - target

The Customary Leggings/Dress/Sweater Combo Outfit
sweater - NY&Co.
dress - goodwill
tank - Walmart
leggings - H&M clearance from Christmas 2009

{Wow, only 1 actual outfit that had a Walmart tank in it this week! A miracle! However...you know I was wearing a tank and leggings pretty much by 4:30pm every day despite what I wore to school or out and about!}

Happy Wednesday!

Labor Day 2010

The Gang's all here!

Aaaaaaand, we're home from The Lake. I know that I'm not supposed to tell the blogosphere when we're away because - agreed- that is dangerous, but, my inlaws were here taking care of the place. And when I say taking care I mean more than just making sure Leland eats and doesn't pee in the house (i.e. I walk in the front door, think Hmmm, being gone for awhile really makes the smell of recently stained hardwood and new paint REALLY pronounced, only to realize that my father-in-law painted the trim in our bedroom and stained and completed the toe strips too. Yeah, things that should have been finished, um, back in February. But we've been busy and it was a GREAT surprise to come home to!).

This is going to be picture overload and I'm going to walk through ever memory because this blog is partially an exaggerated baby book for Becks. And me :)

Labor Day Weekend 2010
It had been months since we'd been to The Lakehouse. Becks talks about it often, and we couldn't wait to take him again. Life is slower at the lake, and we feel less obligated to worry about car drama, house appraisals, or to be tempted by the many distractions that our regular home lends itself to like blogging, cutting the grass, or paying bills. At the lake, we just get to be. We spend more time in our jammies sipping mugs of coffee and less time stressing about school assignments.

We left for the lake on Friday, as soon as B and I returned from our respective schools. With our bags packed and my mom in tow, we headed south in the station wagon with The Wiggles on reserve in the portable DVD player should we have a toddler moment on our way down. And my mom, love her, brought Jimmy Johns. Yum. After stopping in Lex to meet up with my sister and her bff, Danielle, it wasn't long before we were met with long stretches of the country.

The drive up to my parent's place is about 4 miles off of the main road, and it's always a treat to let Becks ride the last bit of the trip in my lap with the windows down. He loves it. As do I. His eyes are wide-eyed in wonder at such a privilege, and his head turns quickly from side-to-side to take in the various farm equipment and livestock that greet us as we arrive. As tradition goes, B stops ever 20 yards or so to let us moo at the cows and ask them silly questions from the safety of our car. Beck waves and says Hi, cow! Bye, cow! to every one we meet. The final drag consists of short little hills and dips that B zooms over with enough speed to make our tummies do flip flops and for Becks to call out Ooooh! while he braces himself against me.

After 20 minutes of talking cow, we finally made it to my parents' house and were greeted by familiar faces from the driveway while the Cracker Barrel rockers taunted us from the lit front porch. We stayed up way too late the first night, laughing about silly things and enjoying the company of the whole family - together at last.

Morning came quickly, and we awoke to Becks standing in his pack-n-play (which he can get out of by himself now!) saying, I'm awake now! Get out! There's really no point in trying to argue more sleep with a 2-year-old, plus it was 8:30am - a full three hours past the time I've become accustomed to these days - so we obliged and met everyone on the back porch, with steamy cups of coffee at the ready. Sweatshirts were a necessity, as the summer air had finally cooled off and the morning air was chilly. A welcomed change since we've been dealing with 90+ degree weather for the past month now. To make the day seem even more autumn-esque, it was the season openers for our favorite college football teams. UK and Michigan both walked away with a win. Breakfast was pancakes and bacon. I think Beckham could've eaten bacon alone, and we honored his request for More, please! more than once.

We filled our days with cheerful conversation, playing with cousins and grandparents and siblings, tailgate cuisine, soft-serve ice cream, 4-wheeler rides, visits to Sonic for vanilla Diet Cokes, and the customary once-a-day trips to Walmart. Becks wasn't too sure to think about riding in the trailer of the ATV at first, but, eventually, was requesting rides on the hour.

Don't you worry - he got to my drink only after it was mere pellet ice (a perk of a coke from Sonic!).

My super great UK blue earring from Walmart for $5! Just had to show you!!!

I was so happy to spend the weekend with my boys and with my family. I may have snuck in some grad school reading when Becks was sleeping, but you better believe I was sitting outside in a Cracker Barrel rocker while I did it, with a Diet Coke in reach. I would even go as far as to say it was relaxing. Of course, it all went by too fast and I'm sad that we won't return for a couple more months, but that will just make our next visit even sweeter.

I hope that your Labor Day weekend was wonderful! Have a great week :)
